Body

Problem Summary

Users need to enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to securely access their account using Microsoft Authenticator or other verification methods.

Environment

  • Users: Employees and Students
  • System: Microsoft MyAccount portal
  • URL: https://myaccount.microsoft.com
  • Devices: Computer (initial setup), mobile device (for MFA methods)

Issue

A user must complete MFA enrollment by adding a verification method before they can use Microsoft Authenticator or other MFA options.

Resolution

Step 1: Sign In to MyAccount

  1. Open a web browser on a computer and go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com
  2. Sign in using your full network account:
    • Students: username@student.monroecc.edu
    • Employees: username@monroecc.edu
  3. Enter your password and choose whether to stay signed in

Step 2: Access Security Settings

  1. On the next page, select Security Info
  2. Click Add sign-in method

Step 3: Add Authentication Method

  1. Choose Authentication Phone
  2. Enter your mobile phone number (recommended device you use daily)
  3. Receive a verification code via text message
  4. Enter the code and confirm

Step 4: Manage MFA Methods (Recommended)

  • After enrollment, you can add or modify authentication methods
  • It is strongly recommended to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app
  • Enable push notifications for the most secure and convenient experience

Step 5: Authenticator App Requirement

  • The Microsoft Authenticator app requires a locked device
  • You must have a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition enabled
  • You must be able to unlock your device to complete authentication

Expected Result

The user successfully enrolls in MFA and can securely authenticate using a phone or Authenticator app when accessing systems.

Cause

MFA enrollment is required to enhance account security and protect against unauthorized access by requiring a second verification method.

Additional Information

  • Message and data rates may apply when using mobile authentication
  • Be sure to allow camera access and notifications for the Authenticator app
  • Users can return to Security Info at any time to manage methods
